Neuer has to wait for his comeback at FC Bayern

Manuel Neuer has to wait for his comeback at Bayern Munich after breaking his lower leg. Coach Thomas Tuchel confirms that Sven Ulreich will be between the posts again for the game.

Manuel Neuer will probably return to the FC Bayern goal soon. But his role in the national team is unclear. Goalkeeping legend Toni Schumacher sees Marc-André ter Stegen as number one for the European Championships – and has special advice for Neuer.

Manuel Neuer is about to return to goal at FC Bayern. The 37-year-old could play for the first time after a break of around ten months in the Bundesliga home game against SV Darmstadt next weekend. Toni Schumacher still advises the long-injured newcomer to resign from the national team.

If the 69-year-old goalkeeper legend (76 international matches for Germany) has his way, FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will be the German number one at the home European Championships next summer instead of Neuer. It would be a novelty – Neuer has played in every major tournament since 2010.

Schumacher said on BILD TV: “I think Ter Stegen did a good job. Although the negative is that we see him so little. We see the other goalkeepers from the Bundesliga every week. I think he’s doing a good job, he’ll certainly have his right to remain number one, even if Manuel Neuer might come back. I am sure that if Ter Stegen continues to perform well, Nagelsmann will also fall back on him.”

For Schumacher, the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s captaincy decision is a reference to the starting goalkeeper at the home European Championships. Nagelsmann recently confirmed midfield boss Ilkay Gündogan, ter Stegen’s teammate in Barcelona, as captain of the selection for the European Championship. Nagelsmann’s predecessor Hansi Flick made Gündogan captain.

“I know that when you are 37 or 38 years old, it always takes a little longer for the injuries to heal,” said Schumacher about Neuer. “I can’t imagine, if I interpret it correctly, that he’s no longer captain either, that not much will change in goal. That means: ter Stegen will remain number one.”

“For me the issue would have been over”

If ter Stegen is actually set for the European Championships, Neuer could possibly be the replacement goalkeeper for the European Championships. “I always try to put myself in the situation. For me, the topic of the national team would have been over,” said Schumacher. “I was number one all my life, Manuel Neuer too, and now he should come back and sit on the bench? There’s a lot that goes into it. I don’t know if he’s doing himself any favors.”

Schumacher also commented on the situation of the goalkeepers at FC Bayern. Sven Ulreich currently represents Neuer here. “Ulreich gave the signal himself. ‘I know that I was only a substitute and when Manuel Neuer is fit again, I will go to the bench without a complaint.’ “We’ll have to wait and see,” said Schumacher.

He added: “You certainly don’t lose in one year what you’ve trained for ten or 15 years. But it’s also important to get along with the team and fellow players. It will be exciting.”
