After the World Cup debacle, there was a great fear that DFB captain Alexandra Popp would step down. But it doesn’t come – at least for the time being.

Captain Alexandra Popp would like to continue her national team career, at least for the time being. “In September it’s already going on in the Nations League in Denmark and in Bochum against Iceland. And as of now I’ll go there,” said Germany’s footballer of the year in a “kicker” interview.

When asked about long-term planning in the DFB selection, however, she had “no final answer yet”. Popp didn’t set a time frame: “First of all, I want to get through the World Cup.”

Olympic qualification? “It’s going to be hard enough”

The qualification, i.e. the Nations League, will be difficult enough. I became Olympic champion in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. But if I go to a tournament, I also want to play for the title,” said Popp with a view to a possible Olympic participation.

The VfL Wolfsburg striker had scored four goals at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but the national team was eliminated in the preliminary round for the first time. “I don’t have a real explanation. We lacked the automatisms that would have brought us security,” said the 32-year-old. “We didn’t get into the flow like last year at the European Championships. It was different there.” A year ago, the DFB selection had reached the European Championship final.
