Celtic boss Peter Lawwell said he had received insults and threats from “some circles”. The official has now announced his resignation.
The chairman of the troubled traditional club Celtic Glasgow has announced his resignation at the end of the year after massive hostility. “It is with great sadness that I announce this,” Peter Lawwell was quoted as saying on the Scots homepage, but “insults and threats from some quarters have increased and have now become unbearable.”
The threats “scared and worried my family. At this point in my life, I don’t need that,” said the 66-year-old. “That’s why I’ve decided to retire from the club I’ve loved all my life.” Lawwell was managing director of “Hoops” from 2003 to 2021, returning as chairman in 2023.
The Celtics’ managing director was affected by the move: “I am deeply disappointed. This is a truly sad day for Celtic. And it is so sad because a valued colleague of ours was given the feeling that he had to resign. Peter is one thing above all: a Celtic fan through and through.”
As Scottish media report, the fans’ dissatisfaction was already clear at the last league game against Dundee United. Some of the supporters booed the boardroom and pointed the finger at the bosses.
The resignation comes at a difficult time for Celtic, both sportingly and structurally. The club, which has won 13 of the last 14 championship titles, failed to qualify for the Champions League against Qairat Almaty, and coach Brendan Rodgers left the club in October in a dispute with the board.
Successor Wilfried Nancy started with four defeats, including the lost League Cup final against St. Mirren and a 1-2 loss at Dundee United on Wednesday evening. In the domestic league, Celtic are six points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian, but have also played a game less.
