Oscar Wallin: Football Retirement at 24 – ‘Lost Desire

Swedish football player Oscar Wallin (24) decided to end his professional career even before the quarter of a century, although neither serious injury nor disciplinary problems are behind him.

“I don’t have the desire anymore. Technically I could play again, but right now I don’t have the desire, and I’m not interested in playing in Sweden either,” Wallin said, explaining that he wants to make up for all that he has missed in the last 15 years dedicated to football.

The defender started as a boy in Essviks AIF, and his path then led him through GIF Sundsvall to Hudiksvalls FF, where he began his senior career. Two seasons followed in Degerfors, and last year he arrived in the English third division Peterborough United.

At the beginning of autumn, he terminated the contract with the English at his own request in order to return to his homeland and continue his education. Now he has confirmed that he is completely retiring from the lawn:

“I never planned anything in football. I just took it as it came, but I’ve known for a long time that I wasn’t going to play until I was 35. It could have ended at 27 or 22, it turned out to be 24.”

Wallin leaves open the possibility of a return – “technically I could start again” – but stresses that for now he wants to focus on education and life outside of sports.
