Maria Sharapova Calls for Equal Financial Endowment in Male and Female Tennis Tournaments

Maria Sharapova, a former Russian tennis player who won almost 37 million euros in prize money during her career, joined the voices that criticize the difference that usually exists between the financial endowment of men’s tournaments (ATP) and that of women’s tournaments (WTA). On the American television program Bloomberg Screentime, Sharapova gave a conference in which she spoke, among other things, with journalist Jason Kelly about it.

“This week, there is a men’s tournament in Shanghai (a Masters 1,000) with a prize of 1.26 million dollars (1.2 euros) for the winner. In the same week, there is a women’s tournament in China (Zhengzhou, a 250) with a prize of 120,000 dollars (114,000 euros) for the winner,” Maria said.

The winner of five majors believes that something needs to be done about it. “I don’t know if anyone is familiar with those numbers, but you go to a Grand Slam and we celebrate that there are equal prize money. Brilliant. Those are the most important events with the most attention, media and expectation. But then the rest of the tour, which is the other eight or nine months, is there. “The disparity is crazy and that needs to be addressed.”
