Manchester United Players Pay Tribute to Club Legend Bobby Charlton

Manchester United players, including captain Bruno Fernandes, paid tribute to club legend Bobby Charlton, who died on Saturday, with a minute of applause before their match in Sheffield on Saturday evening. The Portuguese midfielder laid a wreath on the pitch at Bramall Lane and players from both teams gathered around the central circle to applaud the former glory of the Red Devils and the England team, with whom he won the World Cup on home soil in 1966.

“To be honest with you, it’s devastating,” reacted midfielder Scott McTominay, a child of the club, before kick-off on Sky Sports. “He was an icon within the club and around the world. Everyone knew him because he was a football legend and, more importantly, an incredible person.”

He was “an exceptional gentleman”, also praised him by Manchester United coach, the Dutchman Erik ten Hag. The former midfielder, who has died aged 86, was an executive in the 1966 home world champion team, England’s last trophy. He also allowed Manchester United to be the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968.
