Malagasy Judoka Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy Aims for Olympic Qualification in the Women’s Under 70 kg Category

Paris 2024 is on the horizon. Judokas from all over the world want to live their Olympic dream. Among them, a young Malagasy woman is causing a sensation in the person of Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy, in the women’s under 70 kg category.

Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy is well on her way to Olympic qualification, as she currently occupies 28th place in the world rankings. Taking into account the points earned between June 24, 2022 and June 23, 2024, this ranking is specific to the Olympics and does not correspond to the usual world ranking, which counts all the points acquired by judokas without time limit.
To ensure her place at the Olympics, Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy must appear in the Top 17 in her category, which corresponds to the number of quotas allocated to the best performing countries. She still has eight months to achieve this, by participating in various international competitions which will offer her the opportunity to collect points.
If she does not succeed, she can still hope for a continental quota, which depends on the number of places allocated to each continent and the number of points obtained by the judokas of said continent, without distinction of sex or weight. This system aims to guarantee fair representation of the five continents at the Olympic Games.
Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy has already collected 1,047 points in this specific world ranking, which positions her among the serious contenders for direct qualification. If she succeeds, it will be a historic feat for Malagasy judo, which has never sent a qualified judoka directly to the Olympics, but always via a wild card.

World ranking

Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy continues her progression in the senior world rankings. The Malagasy judokate, who reached 40th place last week, gained one place and is now in 39th position. This new ranking is due to fluctuations in the rankings of other fighters. Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy thus confirms her good form and displays her ambition to get closer to the world top 30.
