Liège Dominates Zielona Gora in ENBL Group Phase Opener

Liège won quite easily (102-79) against the Poles of Zielona Gora for its first meeting counting for the group phase (group B) of the ENBL (European North Basketball League). Liège is the first Belgian club to participate in this European competition (the fifth in descending order of importance) recognized by FIBA.

The sixteen participating clubs are divided into two groups of eight where all the teams meet once, either at home or away depending on a draw, before a final phase. Liège will play a total of three home matches and four away matches in this competition originally launched in Scandinavia.

Against the Poles of Zielona Gora, Liège was never behind, tolerating only one tie (3-3).

Led by Manu Lecomte (22 points, 6 assists, 5/6 at 3 points) and Avelon John Jr (21 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists), the Liégeois quickly emerged at 20-9 (7th) and 29-18 at the end of the first quarter. The second act took place on a fairly similar scenario with Liégeois, more skillful from a distance (14 triples against 4) and more collective (24 assists against 12), further increasing their lead to lead 56-39 at half-time.

In the 3rd quarter, the Poles managed to stop the bleeding with Darious Hall (18 points, 10 rebounds) and James Washington (15 points, 3 rebounds). A flash in the pan that the Liégeois that Bram Bogaerts (17 points, 4 rebounds) was responsible for putting out for the Principalities.

For their next ENBL meeting, coach Alex Zampier’s men will travel to Romania on November 15 at CSO Voluntari.
