Judo athletes from Austria claim bronze at Judo World Tour in Abu Dhabi

Lubjana Piovesana from Vorarlberg and Wachid Borchashvili from Upper Austria each won the bronze medal on Wednesday at the penultimate stop of the Judo World Tour. The 26-year-old Austro-British woman prevailed against the Czech Renata Zachova in the small final with Ippon at the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi in the up to 63 kg class and won a medal for the first time at this level.

“Lubjana dominated the final battle for third place in all respects and won quickly. This medal was overdue,” said ÖJV sports director Markus Moser, pleased with third place.

The 25-year-old Borchashvili (up to 81 kg) also won the fight for bronze against the Portuguese Joao Fernando with Ippon. The medal for Borchashvili was also “more than deserved,” said Moser. “We can be very happy with today.” Magdalena Krssakova (up to 63 kg) and Olympic bronze medalist Michaela Polleres (up to 70 kg) each finished seventh.
