Joan Laporta receives permission from Barcelona City Council to build the new Camp Nou

BarcelonaOne of the essential objectives of Joan Laporta’s board of directors in the process of remodeling the Camp Nou was to obtain the construction licenses from Barcelona City Council that were needed to be able to erect the new structure of the Blaugrana stadium. Until now, Barça only had the demolition licenses, which had allowed them to demolish part of the third tier of the south goal last December and which have continued, with the Turkish construction company Limak as the winner of the tender, since June with the demolition of the entire third stand, among other works being carried out at the Barcelona temple.

“The City Council’s governing committee has approved the granting of the main license to remodel the Spotify Camp Nou,” announces the press release published by the club. “The main license gives the green light to the execution of the actions, above and below ground. In this way, during the 2023-2024 season and with the demolitions already practically completed, the bulk of the work will be developed proceeding to the foundations, as well as the execution of the structure of the new third tier, including the two rings ofhospitality“, the note adds.

Barça had not yet obtained these construction licenses due to the intense reformulation of the project carried out by Joan Laporta’s board with respect to the work done by the previous president, Josep Maria Bartomeu. The company IDOM has been one of the main protagonists of this reformulation process. In fact, one of his former employees, Ramon Ramírez, became the top manager of Espai Barça after the dismissal of the previous director, Bill Mannarelli.

Later, Ramírez left the club when the executives of the Catalan entity closest to Laporta opted for the Limak route to carry out the remodeling of the Camp Nou. Recently, Àlex Barbany, one of the names that were part of Laporta’s electoral campaign, also left his position as executive director of Espai Barça and responsible for the commercial area of the project. As several witnesses told ARA, Barbany had lost decision-making power and was tired of certain internal dynamics. Added to these layoffs is the resignation of the manager responsible for Espai Barça, Jordi Llauradó. Previously, Llauradó had abstained in the board’s vote to award Limak the remodeling of the Camp Nou.

The ‘vip’ boxes are further away from the pitch

Bartomeu’s initial proposal for the Camp Nou redevelopment included a ring of boxes vip between the first and second tiers, and increase the slope in the lower tier of the stadium to correct a defect in the remodeling of 1994. The negative consequence of this work was that up to 12,000 season tickets had to be moved in the third grade. This is how Laporta’s board, which remains convinced that there will be games again at the Camp Nou in November 2024, coinciding with the club’s 125th anniversary, justified the intense reformulation of the project’s plans. The ring of lodges vip it has become double and will be located between the second and third tiers. Now, with the building permit in hand, moving from plans to reality is closer.
