Indian Badminton Duo Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy Become Top-Ranked Men’s Doubles Team

Indian men’s doubles badminton duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy rose to the top of the BWF rankings on Tuesday. This is the first time they have been ranked first in the world.

This milestone moment follows their gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

With their triumph in Hangzhou, Rankireddy and Shetty climbed two places in the rankings updated on October 10 with Alfian Fajar-Ardianto Muhammad Rian (Indonesia) and Wei Keng Lian-Chang Wang (China) each dropping one place.

In the final, they had defeated South Koreans Choi Solgyu and Kim Wonho in straight matches to win India’s first ever badminton gold medal at the Asian Games.

The Indian combination has 92,411 rating points compared to 90,129 points for the Indonesians and 89,991 for the Chinese.

At the Asian Games, Shetty and Rankireddy also won India’s first medal in men’s doubles after a gap of 41 years. Leroy D’sa and Pradeep Gandhe were the last duo to win an Asian Video Games medal for India – winning the bronze medal in 1982.

The latest achievement is an update on an already scintillating and sensational CV for both. They had become the first Indians to win the Asian Championships in 58 years in March. The gold in Hangzhou adds to their 2022 Commonwealth Games gold, 2022 Thomas Cup title and bronze medals at the 2022 World Championships.

Meanwhile, in other rankings updates, HS Prannoy dropped one place in men’s singles to No. 8 in the world despite a sensational bronze medal at the Asian Games. PV Sindhu, who crashed out in the quarter-finals, moved up two places to 13th in the world as the highest-ranked Indian player in women’s singles.
