In Search of a Left-Back: Paris Saint-Germain’s Winter Transfer Window Plans

Faced with the long absence of Nuno Mendes, Paris Saint-Germain notices a shortage at the left-back position. The capital club will try to find a solution during the winter transfer window and will notably rely on the influence of the Uruguayan Manuel Ugarte.

Satisfied with its recruitment this summer, Paris Saint-Germain will undoubtedly not be the main driver of the winter transfer window. Departures cannot be ruled out among players lacking playing time, like striker Hugo Ekitike or midfielder Fabian Ruiz. But in terms of arrivals, only a signing for the left-back position seems to be envisaged.

A new Uruguayan in Paris?

Coach Luis Enrique is indeed faced with the long absence of Nuno Mendes. Victim of a hamstring injury, the Portuguese is not expected to return to competition before February. And given its repeated physical problems, Paris Saint-Germain prefers to have its back knowing that behind the versatile Lucas Hernandez, Layvin Kurzawa still does not have the confidence of the Spanish coach.

Several avenues are therefore being studied within the capital club. The media Foot Mercato recently mentioned the case of Nantes native Quentin Merlin, very prominent this season with the Canaries and the France Espoirs team, and proposed by his agent. For its part, the Italian source TMW instead cites the name of the Uruguayan international Mathias Olivera (25 years old).

For the moment, Naples would not intend to sell its left side recruited from Getafe for 15 million euros in the summer of 2022. And we know that president Aurelio De Laurentiis can represent a very difficult obstacle to overcome. Paris Saint-Germain would still intend to try its luck by offering between 20 and 30 million euros for the Neapolitan under contract until 2027. Another asset for the Parisians, the presence of midfielder Manuel Ugarte deemed capable of convince his teammate in the selection.
