“I don’t play football to be afraid”: the Clermont goalkeeper reacts after the firecracker thrown in Montpellier

” I’m doing well “. 36 hours after receiving a firecracker at his feet during the final minutes of the Ligue 1 match between Montpellier and Clermont, Auvergnats goalkeeper Mory Diaw broke his silence. On his Instagram account, the goalkeeper trained at PSG gave reassuring news of his state of health, he who had left the Mosson pitch on a stretcher. A Senegalese international, he was authorized to join his selection after a battery of examinations, for a match next Monday against Cameroon scheduled in Lens.

“It’s difficult to find the words in the aftermath of these events. After the numerous messages I have received, I especially want to reassure you. I am doing well and the exams carried out this morning allow me to go to the selection to defend the colors of my country,” he explains in the preamble on the social network.

Diaw is no less marked, as he explains later. “I remain extremely shocked by the attack I suffered yesterday. I don’t play football to be afraid on the pitch. I do this job because playing football is what I love most in the world. This kind of behavior has no place in a stadium.”

“Logically shocked”

Diaw left the Mosson stadium with his teammates after the final interruption of the match which counted for the 8th day of Ligue 1, and took additional examinations Monday morning in Clermont-Ferrand.

“In order to monitor the state of health of its player, the club will remain in close contact with the doctor of the Senegalese federation,” the Auvergne club, currently last in Ligue 1, said in a press release on Monday. “Mory Diaw, like all of his teammates, was understandably shocked by this attack,” he adds.

“If the state of health of our goalkeeper is obviously at the center of our attention, the seriousness of these facts calls into question within the club. In the wake of the various events that have punctuated several meetings in recent months, the degree of violence of this attack reinforces the concern of those involved in the game,” continues Clermont Foot.

The Montpellier-Clermont match was stopped in the 91st minute when the score was 4-2 in favor of Montpellier and there were five minutes of added time remaining. A firecracker was then thrown from the Etang de Thau stand welcoming Montpellier supporters, and exploded very close to Mory Diaw. He then collapsed before being evacuated on a stretcher.
