The Bluejays held on at home vs. Pella 23-6.
No drama in the Southeast Polk and Dowling Catholic games. Easy victories for the top two teams in Class 5A.
9:15: It appears Valley is going to get the W
9:13: No. 1 North Polk hangs on vs. Ballard 17-14

Bettendorf leads Iowa City High 22-14 in the Quad Cities, third quarter.
8:32: North Polk in control
The top-ranked Comets (4A) lead Ballard 17-0 late in the third quarter.
Johnston scored a TD at Ankeny, two-point conversion fails. Ankeny leads 14-9.
Creston extends lead to 35-21 over upset-minded Harlan.
8:24: Now the scoreboard gets some use at Ankeny Stadium
Ankeny 14, Johnston 3 … 6 minutes left in the third.
Over in Dallas County: Ankeny Centennial extends its lead to 28-0 over Waukee Northwest.
8:14: A barnburner in Creston
Creston is 9-0 and playing at home, but the Panthers probably didn’t love being matched up against Harlan in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. The Cyclones use state championship trophies as paper weights.
Creston leads 28-21 at halftime.
8:11: Indianola brought its A-game tonight

Also: Norwalk trails 14-0 at Glenwood at halftime. And Bondurant-Farrar hanging on to a 10-0 lead over Pella after two quarters.
8:02: West Des Moines Valley hunting for an upset
Can we even call it an upset when Valley wins a playoff game, though? The Tigers are always exceptionally well-coached and play their best football this time of year.
7:52: Most games at halftime, or close to it
North Polk still clinging to that 10-0 lead over Ballard. Ankeny headed to the locker room with that 7-0 lead over Johnston.

Ankeny Centennial still pitching a shutout at Waukee Northwest. It’s 21-0 as the teams head to the locker rooms.
7:43: Some highly ranked teams are cruising
Iowa City Regina is beating Wilton 19-0 in Class 1A. Lewis Central is all over LeMars 28-0 in Class 4A. Western Dubuque leads Newton 21-0 in Epworth.
Oh, and Southeast Polk just added to its lead. Rams up 28-0 vs. Linn-Mar. Dowling will soon be headed to a running clock vs. Sioux City East. It’s 38-0.
Central Lyon/George-Little Rock also looks like a running clock in the second half: 35-0 over Roland-Story.
Still a tight one at Northview Middle School in Ankeny. The host Hawks lead Johnston 7-0 late in the first half.
7:32: Fourth-ranked Wolves in trouble
Ankeny Centennial is now ahead 21-0 early in the second quarter at Waukee Northwest. Centennial is ranked 10th in the Register’s Class 5A rankings. Northwest is No. 4.
Meanwhile, No. 1 Southeast Polk isn’t having any trouble with Linn-Mar. It’s 21-0 in Pleasant Hill.
7:28: A few other games we’re keeping an eye on
No. 1 North Polk up early at home 3-0 against Ballard in 4A. No. 5 Bondurant-Farrar leads visiting Pella 10-0, also in 4A. A couple of good matchups in the Des Moines area tonight.

7:20: Centennial up two touchdowns
An upset brewing at Waukee Northwest (7-2) as Ankeny Centennial (5-4) takes an early 14-0 lead.
Up in Ankeny, the host Hawks are leading Johnston 7-0.
At Williams Stadium in Des Moines, Dowling Catholic already has a 24-0 lead over Sioux City East.
And last but not least, Southeast Polk leads Linn-Mar 14-0 on the east side of the Des Moines metro.
7:00: It’s kickoff time across the state
The top 16 teams in each of Iowa’s seven classes are taking the field in the high school football playoffs. Buckle up, and hopefully you bundled up if you’re at a game.

Recruiting/high school sports reporter Alyssa Hertel (@AlyssaHertel) will be in the metro checking out Johnston (5-4) as the Dragons look to pull an upset over No. 5 Ankeny (6-3). The two teams met back on Sept. 15, a 16-10 win for Ankeny.
Eli McKown (@EliMckown23) is in Waukee tonight to watch as No. 4 Waukee Northwest (7-2) takes on No. 10 Ankeny Centennial (5-4).
Joe Randleman (@JoeRandleman) is just north of the city to watch top-ranked North Polk (7-2) take on Ballard (5-4) in Class 4A action. The two teams met earlier this season with Ballard coming away with a tight win.
