Guggenberg Legionnaires Triumph in German Cup and Secure Place in European Competition

Guggenberger Legionnaires prevailed in two games in the final series against the Untouchables Paderborn and, in addition to the cup, also secured a place in the European Cup.

The Guggenberg Legionnaires are once again writing themselves into the history books of German baseball. The Regensburg team became the first team to win the newly created German Cup at the weekend. The special highlight of the following cup is the qualification for the European competition that comes with winning it.

Convincing end to the season

For the Legionnaires it was a more than reconciliatory end to a very long season, also due to the European Championship break, which did not always go as planned. The elimination in the semi-finals of the German championship against eventual title holders Heidenheim was painful. It was all the more impressive how Martin Helmig’s team presented themselves in the fight for the German Cup in the last few weeks.

The Legionnaires marched unstoppably through the competition. One after the other they had to deal with top-class players like Hamburg, Bonn and Paderborn. The bottom line is that every series against the three top teams from the north was a clear win for the Upper Palatinate team. With the championship and the German Cup, both relevant titles go to teams from the Bundesliga South.

Fast leadership

In the second and decisive final game, the Legionnaires took command relatively quickly. In the second inning, David Grimes opened the scoring, sending Eric Harms home. Jonathan Heimler achieved the same with Nino Sacasa and David Dinski with Grimes.

At the same time, Devon Ramirez, back on the mound as a starter, gave the Paderborn offense little room to breathe. In six-plus innings as a pitcher, Ramirez only suffered three hits and one run. That earned him the win as a pitcher.

In the game leader stats, the Legionnaires’ number 8 can also be found at the top as a batter. An RBI, a run and a walk as well as two stolen bases got him there. Ramirez should head to Australia next week with a good feeling to start the season Down Under.

The Untouchables secured their only run in the third inning, but it didn’t have much of an impact on the outcome of the game. Instead, the Legionnaires made everything clear in the eighth period of the game and prepared the red carpet for themselves on the way to the golden trophy. Ramirez scored first, Eric Harms after a Grimes single, Nino Sacasa after a Heimler hit provided the further runs. Valentin Thumann got the final point in the last inning after Ramirez’s RBI single.

Champion maker as cup hero

For the Guggenberg Legionnaires, the season ends with a significant success. Master maker Martin Helmig can claim the first season after his comeback in Regensburg as a cup hero on the credit side.

Despite the cup victory, the Regensburg team will not be very satisfied. The goal for the coming season is clearly the German championship. Work on the big goal has long since begun and the construction sites are also clear. This time Martin Helmig at least has significantly more time to build a team according to his ideas together with those responsible for the Legionnaires on the official side.
