Gran Canaria hosts the SSL Gold Cup, the first Sailing World Cup by nations

The waters of Gran Canaria will host the celebration of the SSL Gold Cupa new competition that aims to emulate the World Cup of soccerconcentrating in one event the best sailors on the planet, from all disciplines, competing in 47-foot boats, with 10 crew members each and four boats per country, representing the 40 countries that passed the previous phase held in Switzerland in the that 56 countries from five continents participated. In addition, all the boats are supplied by the organization, in order to ensure that the best crew wins, sailing under the same conditions as their rivals.

Last minute problems in Bahrain, which had been chosen by the organization to hold the first Sailing World Cup, opened the doors to bringing a new competition to the Islandbut with the aim of establishing itself in the calendar and fighting to become a future Olympic discipline.

Each country will be dressed in its national colors.as if it were the soccer teams, the organization also putting on sale all the kits of the different countries participating in a World Cup in which Spain will be captained by the illustrious Olympic champion Luis Doreste.

As there is practically no time for the crews to train together, the different captains of the national teams have carefully chosen their crews so that they can adapt as soon as possible to a boat of these characteristics to ensure they are competitive on the water.

In the case of Spain, they will begin competing in the quarterfinals on November 27. At the moment The team led by Luis Doreste only knows one of its rivals, who like them directly access this phase, the Italian national team.. The rest of the countries classified for the quarterfinals of the World Cup are Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Australia.

The opening ceremony will take place on November 9. The official presentation ceremony of the SSL Gold Cup took place this morning at Casa Palacio and was attended by Antonio Morales (president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria), Ángel Sabroso (vice-counsellor of Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands), Carolina Darias (mayor of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), Rafael Bonilla (president of the Federation Canaria de Vela), Aridany Romero (Sports Councilor), Carla Campoamor (Sports Councilor of the Las Palmas City Council), Luis Doreste (captain of the Spanish team), Xavier Rohart (president of the SSL Gold Cup) and Michel Niklaus ( competition promoter).

The test has the collaboration of the Canarian Sailing Federation and the RC Náutico de Gran Canaria.
