It appears the Giants have found their man.
The San Francisco Baseball Club is expected to announce the hiring of Bob Melvin as the team’s next manager, according to multiple reports.
The Giants moved quickly to secure their first pick for the position after the San Diego Padres granted them permission to speak with Melvin about the position.
Melvin met with several Giants officials on the baseball operations and ownership side on Monday, according to The Athletic, and everything seemed to reaffirm him as their choice for the job.
The 61-year-old Bay Area native returns home for his 21st season as an MLB manager.
Melvin grew up in the area, played for the Giants when he was a big league catcher and managed the Athletics from 2011-2021, leading Oakland to the playoffs six times.
Melvin made his managerial debut in 2003 replacing Lou Piniella in Seattle.
After two years with the Mariners, Melvin went to the Diamondbacks and worked in Arizona for over four seasons before being fired in May 2009.

He was able to opt out of his A contract after the 2021 season and accept a job with the Padres, where he helped lead San Diego to the NLCS in 2022.
The 2023 campaign was marked by its share of ups and downs and the Padres missed the playoffs despite their $250 million payroll.
Melvin also clashed with AJ Preller, but the Padres general manager said earlier this month that the team planned to keep Melvin as skipper.

Melvin had one year left on his contract in San Diego.
He takes over a Giants team that is looking to reshape the clubhouse culture and bounce back from a season that fell well short of the expectations they had for them.
San Francisco finished the year 79-83 under Gabe Kapler, who was fired earlier this month.
In his three seasons leading the Giants, Kapler went 295-248 and helped the club to a franchise-record 107 wins in 2021.
