Getafe withdraws Alfonso Pérez’s name from the Coliseum for his ‘sexist’ statements

Getafe City Council (Madrid) and Getafe Club de Futbol have agreed this Wednesday to rename the city’s stadium, which goes from being called ‘Coliseum Alfonso Pérez’ to just ‘Coliseum’.

“The council has conveyed to the club that this municipal facility, ceded to Getafe FC, must be an example to transmit positive values of sport such as equality, solidarity and respect”, the council points out in its account from Twitter.

Sara Hernández, mayor of Getafe, announced on Tuesday that she had “contacted” the club presided over by Ángel Torres to propose changing the name of the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, since the ideas shown by the ex-footballer “are not there take place” in the municipality.

Alfonso Pérez, a player born in Getafe and who wore the shirts of Real Madrid, Betis and Barça, gave an interview to El Mundo in which he spoke about the demands of the world champion footballers.

The municipal government, formed by PSOE and Podemos, had already warned that it was considering changing the name of the stadium after the statements of the former player, who assured that “women’s and men’s football cannot be compared for anything, because everything depends on the income it generates and the media impact”

“I would like to earn what Cristiano Ronaldo earns, but I’m not that good. It is what it is. Everyone has to know where they are. They can’t complain. Women’s football has evolved but they have to touch land and know that they cannot be compared in any sense to a male footballer” Pérez pointed out in an interview with El Mundo.

The same mayor of the town, Sara Hernández (PSOE), had declared that she felt very “disappointed and sad” by these statements and had advanced that they had already contacted Getafe and the team’s Supporters’ Federation to “take the necessary measures in favor of equality in our city”.

“It saddens me that he says that his teammates in the Spanish national team have a lot to complain about in the world of football. Man, there have been sexual assaults, the players have denounced absolutely sexist attitudes and they have had to claim minimum working conditions, where I missed that footballers as lauded as Alfonso Pérez had come out to support their colleagues” added the socialist councilor.

“The sexist views reflected by Alfonso Pérez in a recent interview about his teammates in the Spanish national team have no place in our society. Equality is not ‘having our space'”, sources from the Council pointed out to EFE, in the which reiterated that “we do not understand that sport can only be understood as a business”.
