From Adversity to Achievement: Para-Athlete Shines in Adapted Powerlifting

After his life took a 360 degree turn, the sports world helped the para-athlete channel his emotions, now he shines in adapted power lifting.

“I became passionate about adaptive powerlifting. I started off lifting a little on the bar, but thanks to my teacher Raúl Pacheco I can now lift a maximum of 60 kilos; I am sure I can carry more and I will ‘fight’ to increase my level. I also ‘use’ dumbbells and I have noticed strength in my arms, it helps me a lot because at the end of the day, they are what I use to be able to move,” said the para-athlete.

It should be noted that a few months ago in the Multidisciplinary State Championship in Wheelchairs, Amputees and Short Stature, the ‘Mouse’, as he is known by his family and friends, won a bronze medal in para-powerlifting; Likewise, in the ‘Sports Ride: From the Heart for Inclusion’, an event organized by the Morelos State DIF System (SEDIF), he won silver in the ‘handbike’ test, a discipline that he also practices.

Finally, Roberto Carlos stated that sport is his best psychologist, adding that his greatest motivation to move forward is his wife, daughters and mother. Likewise, he explained that he has a sincere friendship with Isaac Terrazas García, Indem’s Sports Development area coordinator, because since he met him, the treatment has always been inclusive and without differences at all times.

Adapted power lifting or para-powerlifting has been one of the Paralympic disciplines since Sydney 2000, where Mexico has stood out on the podium of the greatest global event for 15 occasions.
