Frances Tiafoe Ends Gael Monfils’ Winning Streak at Erste Bank Open Round of 16

The American defeated with a persistent performance Frances Tiafoe in the round of 16 of the Erste Bank Open the French Gael Monfils in three sets and stopped his run of success after winning the title in Stockholm.

The spectators saw an intense and entertaining match from the start. After both players were unable to take advantage of their first three break opportunities during the first set, Tiafoe earned a set point at 5:4, but also left it behind. In the following game it was Monfils who got two running opportunities to break and also used the second one. The 37-year-old then served successfully to win the set.

Despite winning the set, the world number 89. the many matches in the successful past few weeks are noticeable. Tiefoe was able to quickly pull away with a 4-0 lead, after which the Frenchman took a medical timeout and had treatment on his right lower leg. With only one game lost, the 25-year-old American equalized the set with a stop ball.

The beginning of the third act was characterized by smooth service games. Monfils tried to keep the rallies short with a lot of risk. In the fifth game, Tiafoe has a break chance, which he can take advantage of after a long rally. As a result, last year’s US Open semi-finalist only allowed one break chance and used his first match point to win 5:7, 6:1, 6:4 after 2:11 hours of play.

The world number 14 sees itself in the round of the last eight. against the No. 2 seeded Italian Jannik Sinner, who easily prevailed against his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego 6:2, 6:4.
