Former AZ Board Member Alex Kroes Eager to Take Over as General Manager of Ajax Amidst Club’s Troubles

Alex Kroes views Ajax’s situation with dismay. The former AZ board member wants to start as the new general manager of the Amsterdam club as soon as possible, but due to a non-competition clause he has to wait until March 15.

“If I can start tomorrow, I would very much like to,” Kroes says NOS. “You can understand that I am also watching with dismay what is currently happening.”

Ajax has had a dramatic start to the season with only five points from five Eredivisie matches. The club recently said goodbye to technical director Sven Mislintat and supervisory board chairman Pier Eringa. Jan van Halst will not return to Ajax’s supervisory board after his period as interim director.

According to AZ director Robert Eenhoorn, there is a possibility that Kroes can start earlier at Ajax, but the director does not want to say how this can be achieved. Kroes thinks it will be difficult to get started in Amsterdam sooner.

“The crack that Robert indicated has been there for about a month and a half,” says Kroes. “But that is still a bit more difficult than most people think or know. But I am certainly open to it and the people within Ajax know that too.”

Mislintat is said to have apologized

Ajax is also looking for a new technical director. There was no longer any support within the club for Mislintat, who was recently fired after just four months. The German brought twelve new players to Ajax, but the purchases have not yet impressed.

In addition, there is still an investigation into Mislintat, who is said to have acquired one or more players through a brokerage firm that has shares in his private company. Sources within Ajax leave it to the NOS know that Mislintat has apologized for not reporting interests surrounding the transfer of Borna Sosa.

Mislintat would understand that he should have reported his possible own interest in the transfers to Ajax. The German does not want to publicly comment on his dismissal and his much-discussed deals.

Ajax is currently preparing for the Europa League match against AEK next Thursday. The team of coach Maurice Steijn had to share the points in the first group match with Olympique Marseille: 3-3.
