After Felix Großschartner (UAE), Rainer Kepplinger (Bahrain) and Tobias Bayer (Alpecin), a fourth Austrian now appears on the start list for the Giro d’Italia, which begins on Saturday. Bora-hansgrohe nominated Patrick Gamper on Monday; the 27-year-old Tyrolean will be taking part in his third Giro and his fourth Grand Tour after 2020 and 2022.

Gamper’s teammate, Emanuel Buchmann, complained bitterly because he wasn’t there. “I can’t describe my disappointment and frustration at not being nominated for the Giro this year,” said the 31-year-old German on Instagram. He was even promised the co-captain role. The man for whom everyone drives at Bora in Italy is called Dani Martinez.

According to sports director Enrico Gasparotto, the Colombian’s goal is a top-five place in the final standings. “He performed very well at the start of the season and apart from the crash at Strade Bianche, the build-up to the Giro was solid. He trained very well in Colombia and we are optimistic that he will be at the top of the rankings,” said Gasparotto.

Helpers should support sprinter van Poppel

They also want to support the Dutch sprinter Danny van Poppel with helpers. “We are relying on Dani and Danny as leaders and versatile stage hunters as backup,” said Gasparotto. It is not unrealistic for the race to open up to outliers in the second and third weeks. “But these stages are mountainous, and that’s why we rely on riders who can climb and get results.”

But the focus isn’t just on the mountain stages. Van Poppel has up to eight sprint options at the Giro. According to Gasparotto, some of them are not easy with a climb in the final. But that is one of the Dutchman’s strengths. “He is in a good mood and with Ryan (Mullen, note) as the driver we are very well positioned for these stages,” said the Bora sports director.

Winner of the last three years not there

The Giro d’Italia, starting on May 4th in Turin, is the first of the three Grands Tours in cycling. The Tour of Italy is 3,400.8 kilometers long and reaches its destination in Rome on May 26th after 21 stages. A total of 176 drivers from 22 teams are at the start. The winners from 2021 to 2023, Egan Bernal, Jai Hindley and Primoz Roglic, are not there.
