Florence-Agathe Dubé-Moreau, curator of contemporary art and spouse of football player Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, has just published a feminist essay entitled “Hors game” which focuses on her experience in this universe.

“The context of men’s professional sport is still very traditional, which carries a certain conservatism. Plus the Kansas City Chiefs are right in the middle of the Midwest,” she says straight away.
Ms. Dubé-Moreau had the opportunity to interact with several other wives and spouses of NFL players.
“We talked a lot about last names, taking your partner’s name after marriage and the duties of a wife, a concept that I was discovering, which is very cultural and religious,” she says.
“Many women feel great pressure, a duty to support their husband in their career, to take care of the home and children 100%” and this even goes so far as to “pack their boyfriend’s suitcase when the parties are outside even if they are adults.
She believes that several measures could be put in place to support these women in their responsibilities and alleviate their mental and work load, “for example, daycare systems”.
“We are in an industry that generates billions of dollars in profits per year, it would be very simple to offer childcare to these women,” she says.
“I’m thinking of travel bonuses when they have to change jobs when their spouse is swapped teams and they sometimes have to retake their licenses.”
The arrival of singer Taylor Swift in the world of the NFL since she also dated a Kansas City player has inevitably had its effect on the sport.
“What I find fascinating is the visibility that Taylor Swift has, it’s the power of representation.”
