Bundesliga

After last season everything was supposed to be different at FC Bayern. No more internal disputes, no unrest, no nerve-wracking staff layoffs. In July, Bavarian Honorary President Uli Hoeneß told “Sky”: “The things we do are not discussed in public, but in small circles and that is good for the cause.”

After more information was leaked in Munich than in the traffic light government, the club had “pacified itself”, Hoeneß said and it was “totally calm”. Puppy cake. This season, FC Bayern is once again the headline monopolist – and usually has itself to thank for that.

Only recently, Uli Hoeneß emphasized in the eponymous manner at the “BR’s Sunday get-together” that it was “not necessarily wise” to dismiss Julian Nagelsmann as Bayern coach. A clear swipe at the current trainer Thomas Tuchel.

FC Bayern: Uli Hoeneß with clear criticism of Thomas Tuchel

A few days later, Hoeneß attacked Tuchel even more explicitly to “RTL/ntv” when he described his criticism of the transfer policy as “unwise statements”. These are “a hit for the media, especially for the tabloids.”

Ironically, the Bayern patriarch’s statements were also a hit for the media. Lothar Matthäus also gave his two cents – someone who, according to Hoeneß’ famous verdict, “wouldn’t even be a greenkeeper” at Bayern. In the “Bild” podcast “Bayern-Insider” Matthäus has now commented on the unrest within the club.

Matthäus explained that it was typical for Hoeneß to often dish it out against players, coaches or colleagues: “Uli is just the one who puts these headlines out there.” This consequently creates explosive elements between them – as was the case with Hoeneß’s most recent statement about Nagelsmann.

Lothar Matthäus: Hoeneß statements cause mistrust

“If I heard Uli Hoeneß’s statement as a coach, you would also ask yourself what you would do if the other coach was better,” said Matthäus. “That’s where mistrust arises, automatically. Something will definitely come up somewhere, the issue isn’t over yet.”

On the other hand, Thomas Tuchel’s behavior does not have a particularly de-escalating effect. The 50-year-old is himself considered a difficult person to deal with; he was reportedly fired as a coach in Paris and Dortmund due to differences with the club’s management.

“Uli, of course, only represents the views of FC Bayern,” Matthäus continued. “And Thomas Tuchel is the one who has the right to demand new players as a coach. But as a club I don’t have to listen to what he demanded.

“Bild” reporter Tobi Altschäffl is certain: A discussion between Hoeneß and Tuchel is important. Otherwise, what builds up could “at some point lead to explosions for Tuchel.”

At least Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart is absolutely confident in a situation in which not many would be. After seven games, he and his team only got one point and lost six times. The club went into the international break as bottom of the table. Before that, Baumgart was asked by a reporter from “Sportschau” what the people of Cologne needed in the crisis. The 51-year-old’s clear and confident answer: “Me. I mean that too.”
