Bas Dost was immediately helped by the medical staff of both teams and the emergency services.
The unfortunate striker was shielded by the other players and after perilous minutes there was hopeful news.
Dost was carried from the field on a stretcher and gave a thumbs up. He also received a standing ovation from all the fans.
NEC confirmed on X that Dost was “conscious”. Later in the evening, the club shared a photo and message from Dost from the hospital.
“I’m doing well. The help I received on the field was fantastic. I’m now in hospital and I feel good. Thank you for all the support.”
The match, in which the ex-Club striker had opened the scoring, was not resumed.
Visibly emotional, NEC director Wilco van Schaik gave an update to ESPN shortly after the match.
