During the league game in Alkmaar, Nijmegen’s Bas Dost collapses in the center circle and remains motionless. The players form a circle as the 34-year-old is revived on the pitch. The former Bundesliga striker contacted his wife while he was still in the dressing room.

Former Bundesliga striker Bas Dost collapsed during a soccer game in the Netherlands and was treated on the pitch for minutes. The first division game between AZ Alkmaar and NEC Nijmegen on Sunday was then canceled. Dost, who plays for NEC, was conscious and carried off the pitch, his club said on Sunday evening. Images showed paramedics carrying a defibrillator onto the field, but it was not clear whether it was used.

The dramatic scenes took place shortly before the final whistle of the game. After the striker ran back in the 90th minute because of an attack by opponent Alkmaar, he collapsed without any influence from the opponent and remained motionless in the center circle. The game continued for a few seconds before the referee noticed the incident. Players from both teams stood around him protectively and shielded him with a cloth.

Dost called his wife from the cabin

The away game was then canceled five minutes before the end in the 90th minute when the score was 2-1 for Nijmegen. As the newspaper “De Gelderlander” reported, the 34-year-old gave another thumbs up as he left the pitch on a stretcher to the applause of the spectators. Later in the cabin, Dost had already sat up on the stretcher when his father arrived and he called his wife to calm her down, De Gelderlander reported.

Dost later spoke out publicly: “I’m fine. The help I received on site was fantastic. I’m in the hospital now and doing well. Thank you for all the support!” wrote the professional via Nijmegen’s X-Profile and showed himself in a photo in the hospital bed with his thumbs up.

Eintracht Frankfurt, where Bas played from 2019 to 2020, wished the professional a speedy recovery. “The Eintracht family is thinking of you and wishes you a full recovery,” the club said in a statement.
