At the 15th point in the very last game, the roof of the Wiener Stadthalle briefly rose again when a backhand from Dominic Thiem hit Stefanos Tsitsipas very brutally. There was hope in the packed stands, perhaps not for the big comeback, but for a continuation of this very interesting and good tennis match.
Three points later the matter was over, Tsitsipas ended the first round match appropriately with an ace. And then politely thanked the audience, who had also applauded some of his good shots.
At the press conference afterwards, Thiem and Tsitsipas almost gave each other the door handle. And we actually came to the same conclusion: a few points would have made the difference. And Dominic Thiem has reached a good level of play. But that wasn’t enough to win against a top ten man.
Thiem now qualified for Paris-Bercy
“A lot of things went right today. You have to win the tiebreak,” said Thiem initially. And further: “The home crowd brings huge energy. The fans have been behind me with sensational support for years, in Kitzbühel or Vienna. But I have to find ways to go into a game like I did today in other weeks too.”
So the problem is not with today’s match. But at all the other tournaments. In any case, the upcoming tasks won’t be quite as sexy as a meeting with Stefanos Tsitsipas in front of a sold-out Vienna Stadthalle: it’s going to Paris-Bercy, where Dominic Thiem has to prove himself in the qualification. Then either to Sofia or Metz. With the big goal of getting a fixed place for the Australian Open 2024.
By the way, Dominic Thiem ruled out starting in a Challenger just to achieve that on Tuesday evening. “I’ve had enough chances to do that this year.”
