Discover the Ancient Art of Archery at Arco al Parco: A Special Event at Terramara Archaeological Park

“Arco al Parco” is the appointment on Sunday 15 October at the Terramara archaeological park in Montale, a truly special event that combines the presentation of the most recent research on bows and arrows from the Bronze Age, curated by Monia Barbieri of the staff of the Park, and the archery tests open to everyone, adults and children (from 6 years old), with the archers of the San Galgano Association of Formigine, exceptional guests for the first time at the Park. The bowmaker Marco Bonini, an expert in the reproduction of historical and prehistoric bows, will also be present.

The bow is one of the oldest weapons used by man, dating back to around 10 thousand years ago, and due to its effectiveness it was used for hunting and war until the appearance of firearms. Some fragments of maple wood were found in the Montale excavations, perhaps referring to arches. The use of such weapons in the terramare is also demonstrated by the discovery of numerous arrowheads made of deer horn, bronze or flint, probably fixed on wooden shafts or canes thanks to resins and vegetable ropes. The arrows, completed with feathers of birds of prey or duck, were contained in leather quivers.

The Park, open this year for the first time until the end of November, is located in via Vandelli in Montale Rangone. It is open on Sundays and holidays from 9.30am to 1.30pm and from 2.30pm to 7pm. The visits are guided, departing every 45 minutes with no obligation to book, but it is advisable to check time availability. For information you can call the numbers 335 8136948 (from 9am to 1pm from Monday to Friday) and 059 532020 (during the Park’s opening hours), or write to [email protected]. You can also book online via the ioPrenoto App. The entrance ticket costs 7 euros (reduced 5 euros), entry is free up to 5 and over 65 years of age. There is a 50 percent reduction on the ticket for those in possession of the Park’s Fidelity card.

The Terramara Park is a special open-air museum, open to the public on Sundays and holidays, where you can observe the traces of a typical Emilian village from the Bronze Age, 3,500 years ago. In fact, you can enter the houses reconstructed on the basis of archaeological excavations, attend demonstrations of ancient craft techniques, meet researchers and participate in themed workshops designed in particular for girls and boys.

The visit to the Montale Park includes a guided tour of the archaeological area and the reconstructions of the Terramara combined with demonstrations for everyone and thematic workshops for children and families. In case of severe bad weather the program may be subject to change. The complete program is available on the Park website (www.parcomontale.it) and on Parcomontale social networks Facebook and Instagram.
