Croatia’s Euro 2024 Qualification Hopes Diminish with Loss to Wales

Croatia was heckled for 90 minutes, taken by the Welsh intensity and the explosive double from their midfielder Harry Wilson, and it was therefore logical that they lost to Wales this Sunday evening ( 2-1). Combined with Turkey’s large victory against Latvia (4-0), this defeat places the 2018 world vice-champions in a very bad position in their quest for direct qualification for Euro 2024. Luka Modric and his teammates are third in group D, six points behind the Turks, who have a match in hand, and overtaken by their evening opponents on the particular goal difference (1-1 in the first leg).

In Cardiff, Harry Wilson guided his team to victory by scoring a sumptuous double. The Burnley midfielder concluded a rapid attack by subtly lobbing Livakovic (47th). A few minutes later, he extended with his head a cross from Daniel James to once again deceive the Croatian goalkeeper (60th).

An extra chance thanks to the League of Nations

Mario Pasalic reignited the suspense by taking a cross from his captain Modric at the start of the last quarter of an hour. The Croats pushed hard to equalize and maintain their second place but they came up against the tenacity of the Dragons. They will have two matches left to catch up with Turkey or, at a minimum, get back in front of the Welsh.
