Early cup exit for Cercle Brugge. The Association lost a third first division team against Zulte Waregem on Tuesday. The leader in 1B saved extra time thanks to a late goal from Vossen. Essevee remained the coolest in the penalty shootout.

He stopped Etonde and Lopes Da Silva’s penalties, while at Zulte Waregem only Rommens missed. Zinho Gano converted the decisive penalty flawlessly.

We didn’t do that and with penalties it can always go either way. Zulte Waregem is first in the second division, so we certainly did not underestimate them. They are a JPL-worthy team, we knew it would be a battle. We let them live and we should have killed them. I think it was in our disadvantage was that there was no VAR. The referee had to make the decision himself and did not dare. There were a few questionable phases. I am satisfied with my own performance, I was well in the match.
