Catalonia’s outstanding duties in the field of technology

BrusselsCatalunya is in the top 5 regions of the European Union with a higher amount of workers dedicated to the high technology sector. The two areas that lead the ranking are that of Paris (Isle of France) and the Community of Madrid, which add up to 420,000 and 289,000, respectively. But this is not exactly good news: if we compare the figure with the number of workers in the Principality, the truth is that it is below the European average with regard to the number of workers in high technology. For example, 7.2% of workers in the Southern Ireland region are engaged in it, 6% in Lazio (Italy) or 5.8% in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, while the Principality is remains at 4.8%.

The community report published this Monday highlights the importance of the high-tech sector, which refers to that which is at a more advanced level of development and, among others, includes advanced computer electronics or biotechnology . “It is key to economic growth and productivity, and often provides opportunities for well-paid jobs,” notes the Eurostat study.

They are also above different regions of the Nordic countries, the Baltic republics, the Netherlands, the south of Germany or, among others, the north of Italy. The average of the European Union, where there are nearly 10 million employees in the sector, is slightly higher than that of Catalonia and reaches 4.9%.

The Balearic Islands and the Valencian Country register a much lower percentage, 1.7% and 1.6%, respectively. In Spain as a whole, only the Community of Madrid (6.2%) and the Basque Country (4.9%) surpass Catalonia. This is followed by Galicia (2.5%), Castilla-La Mancha (2.1%) and Aragon (2%). Conversely, the autonomous communities with lower percentages are Extremadura (1.5%), Andalusia (1.7%) or Castilla y León (1.9%).

Catalonia, above average in terms of gender equality

Catalonia is indeed above the European average for the percentage of women workers in the sector, which is 32.8%. The Principality is one of the regions that exceed 36%, like Paris, all the regions of the Baltic republics and some of the center of Italy. At state level, the Basque Country, Paris, Castilla y León and Asturias are also at the top.

In contrast, the vast majority of central and northern Europe – where there is a significant amount of workers in the high-tech sector – have lower percentages, between 27.5% and 36%. The Community of Madrid is also below Catalonia, between 32.5% and 36%. Be that as it may, however, it is a very masculinized sector and on a European scale more than two thirds of the workers (67.2%) are men.
