Carolina Giants Make History Winning Both Men’s and Women’s Professional Basketball Leagues in Puerto Rico

Carolina – For the first time since 1976, a municipality in Puerto Rico was crowned in the two main men’s and women’s professional basketball leagues on the island.

The Carolina Giants defeated the Atenienses de Manatí on Monday in the sixth game of the final by a score of 74-63, to win the eighteenth championship in their history in the National Women’s Superior Basketball (BSNF).

Teana Muldrow was immense for the locals, both offensively and defensively, to finish the series in a Guillermo Angulo Coliseum that saw its best attendance of the season. The import scored 34 points with 13 rebounds.

Carolina equaled the feat of Río Piedras in 1976, when it won the men’s (Cardenales) and women’s (Rebeldes) titles in Puerto Rican professional basketball, as shared by historian, statistician and former secretary of the Basketball Federation, Francisco “Paquito” Rodríguez.

That Rebels team was led by Georgie Báez and was made up of the players Miriam “Betty” Segarra and María “Cuca” Cordovés, among others.

Annie González served as the team’s representative.

At the end of July of this year, the Giants won the first title in their history in the National Superior Basketball (BSN).

Muldrow was followed by Selena Lott and Jill Townsend with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

In the loss, Rebecca Tobin contributed 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

The Athenians opened the first quarter with a 4-0 lead, until Charity Harris scored the first points for Carolina.

The period would remain even until the end, when a triple by Claudia Ortiz closed the gap, 17-5.

For the second quarter, Manatí would regain the lead 22-19 with another triple, this time by Ana Barrientos, who would retire due to injury.

The Athenians closed the first half on top, 37-35, with 22 points in the paint and another 11 points from the bench.

But the Athenians, led by Tobin, resisted. Carolina entered the fourth quarter with a 55-48 lead.

The rest was history. Muldrow was everywhere on the court, and with the help of his teammates Lott and Townsend, they sealed the victory.
