Can Borussia Gladbach Break Their Mainz Curse?

There was nothing to be gained last season!

After their first win of the season, the Gladbachers go into the game against bottom team Mainz with a tailwind (Friday, 8.30 p.m./DAZN). But the club is plagued by a real Mainz trauma. But there’s even more: Borussia has been waiting for two wins in a row for more than a year and a half!

Borussia had the worst record of the past Bundesliga season against Rheinhessen. The club only lost both duels against Union Berlin. In February there was a 0:4 defeat at the 05ers. The low point of Daniel Farke’s (46) tenure. Afterwards, Managing Director Sport Roland Virkus (56) burst his collar and cursed loudly in the locker room after the final whistle.

Even in the first half of the season, Borussia, who were still unbeaten at the time, had nothing to gain at home. After a red card against Ko Itakura (26) and Aaron Martin’s free kick, the score was 0-1. The Foals have been waiting for a win against the 05ers for five duels.

When asked by BILD, Gerardo Seoane (44) doesn’t want to worry too much about the direct duels: “It matters how Mainz played this season. These are the reference games. Of course, it could be that we watch games from last season if we want to address individual things. But that has no direct influence on our style of play. But it’s always a different game, a different starting point. A lot has changed for us too.”

Mainz is still without a win, only picking up one point in the Rhine-Hesse derby against Frankfurt (1:1). Seoane still expects a strong opponent. Seoane: “It’s not the result of the last game that matters, but rather the strategy the opponent used. Mainz is the team in the league that has the most duels. Mainz works very well against the ball, didn’t allow that much in all games and is difficult to play against.”

The Swiss continued: “You may not have gotten the return you deserved so far. That affects the mood of the team. We expect an opponent who is looking for compensation.”

With their first away win since January, Gladbach ended their first losing streak. Now it should work with the first home win of the season.

And much more important: Borussia could celebrate two wins in a row for the first time in 566 days (!). Farke despaired of this “feat”. The Foals last achieved this under Adi Hütter in March 2022 with victories against Hertha (12.03) and in Bochum (18.03). The team from the Lower Rhine has already overcome the Bochum hurdle.
