BVB false start in the Champions League: Dortmund’s big problem

“The boys tried everything” – BVB still winless after a zero against Milan

BVB missed their first win of the Champions League season against AC Milan, but at least secured a draw. Coach Edin Terzic sees a “decent game” from his team and still believes in reaching the round of 16.

Only one point from two games: Borussia Dortmund got off to a false start in the Champions League. The current biggest shortcoming became apparent against Milan when coach Terzic was substituted in the 85th minute.

When the boards with the numbers 14 and 18 were held up five minutes before the end of regular time, this documented the current pecking order. It was the last measure that Edin Terzic could take to increase the chances of a much-needed first victory in the Champions League. Niclas Füllkrug was substituted, but the BVB coach didn’t bring in Sébastien Haller – but Youssoufa Moukoko. The best Dortmund striker of the last second half of the season remained on the bench – as he did in the 2-0 defeat in Paris.

In the end, Moukoko couldn’t help either, it remained 0-0 against AC Milan – as a result, after the second matchday, Dortmund are in last place in Group F with just one point: behind Newcastle (4 points), Paris (3). and Milan (2).

“We had the feeling that we had few actions where we played to the striker with his back to the goal,” said Terzic, explaining his line-up and substitution decisions. In fact, Dortmund currently rarely play with crosses, the processing of which is Haller’s specialty.

With Haller, BVB’s offensive game had structure

In the current season, however, Haller has not yet been able to build on the remarkably strong performances that the Ivorian showed in the second half of the old season. The 29-year-old was the deciding factor. With him in the center of attack, the presentation had structure: Haller secured balls, either took the shot himself or set up his colleagues who were coming up. He scored nine goals in the 19 Bundesliga games he played from January to May and prepared five more. He was largely responsible for BVB, which was only sixth in the table at the winter break, almost becoming German champions.

Which was all the more surprising since Haller was out for the entire first half of the season due to testicular cancer. Hardly anyone would have expected such a strong comeback. To do this, however, he also had to push his limits.

How important Haller is will become clear again this season. When he’s in top form, he’s difficult to replace. Füllkrug (30), who only came to Dortmund at the end of August, is also a different type of striker – and the team is still finding it difficult to make the adjustment required to bring him into the game better. The former Bremer player recently scored his first goal in the 3-1 win in Hoffenheim, but his routes are different. Often the other players can’t find him yet.

“It is important that we always have a striker in top form in the team,” said Füllkrug on Wednesday. However, even if the national striker is currently ahead in the competition, this is still not the case. And that is one of Dortmund’s problems.
