Successful test for SV Darmstadt 98: A good week before the home game against RB Leipzig, the eleventh in the Bundesliga won against the eleventh in the second division, SV Elversberg, 4:2 (2:0). Fraser Hornby (20th and 43rd) as well as Luca Pfeiffer (68th) and Fabian Nürnberger (73rd) scored the goals for the Lilies. Kevin Koffi (51st) and Semih Sahin (85th) scored for Elversberg.

Darmstadt only had two players in the starting line-up, Matthias Bader and Jannik Müller, who had also started in the previous Bundesliga game against Augsburg (2-1). Christoph Zimmermann made his comeback after back problems had recently put him out of action. Compared to the 1-1 draw in Kiel, Elversberg coach Horst Steffen only left captain Robin Fellhauer in the starting line-up.

Darmstadt immediately takes over the direction

The Lilies had more of the game from the start and really stepped on the gas after a good quarter of an hour. In the 18th minute, Filip Stojilkovic was unable to convert a well-timed pass from Matthias Bader in front of Elversberg’s keeper Tim Boss. Mathias Honsak headed the resulting corner onto the crossbar.

It was Honsak who prepared the lead in the 20th minute with a sharp cross. Hornby just had to hold out his foot. It was the first goal in an official game for the summer newcomer in the Lilies jersey. Shortly before the break, Hornby made it 2-0 after a cross from Stojilkovic. Elversberg had no significant opportunity to score throughout the first half.

For Elversberg, two chances are enough for two goals

The guests came out of the locker room with more momentum and shortened the score through Koffi (51′), although Zimmermann was unable to significantly disrupt the 37-year-old attacker. Shortly afterwards, Stojilkovic could have restored the old distance, but his shot failed at the Elversberg keeper, as did Hornby (57th).

After an hour, coach Torsten Lieberknecht made a complete change. There was no noticeable break in the home team’s game; they remained the dominant team. Pfeiffer used an assist from Braydon Manu to make it 3-1. Nürnberger increased to 4:1 after a successful combination via Tim Skarke and Fabio Torsiello. With their second chance to score, the guests came close again through Sahin.

Lieberknecht criticizes the exploitation of opportunities and positional play

Lilien coach Lieberknecht was mostly satisfied after the game: “A good test, a good opponent, moved well, scored some nice goals, but also things that we can point out in order to improve,” he said. For him, things that needed to be improved included, among other things, the exploitation of opportunities, positional play when in possession of the ball and set pieces. The players now get a free weekend. A running training session is scheduled for Monday, and from Tuesday the full focus will be on the game against Leipzig (Saturday, October 21st, 3:30 p.m. at Böllenfalltor).
