It’s the wedding at the end of the season. Not a classic marriage but a sporting marriage between two characters. On the one hand, there is the young 20-year-old Danish player, Holger Rune, who is going through a bad period with a record of six defeats for only one victory since his quarter-final at Wimbledon. And on the other, Boris Becker, the former star of the circuit who will return to his coaching training less than a year after his release from prison in England following a conviction for tax fraud. This collaboration, which began a few days ago, will come to life this Tuesday at the Basel tournament with the match of the current sixth in the world against the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
“Boris has done a good job as Novak Djokovic’s coach and as a player. I can’t wait to hear what he has to say,” explained Holger Rune about the man who coached Nole from 2013 to 2016 but who has not coached for six years. “It’s great to learn from a former player like Boris.”
The two men who prepared for the Swiss event near Monte-Carlo last week: “Boris teaches me basic but important things. It’ll be fun, you’ll see. I hope he can give me some good advice and help me do better.”
The two men agreed on a test period in Basel, on the ATP 1000 in Paris, where the Dane is the defending champion, and on the Masters at the end of the season if Holger Rune qualifies. What is certain, however, is that this return to the forefront delights the former triple winner of Wimbledon.
”I love tennis and when one of the best 20-year-old players in the world asks you if I would like to coach him… Anyone who says no to that question has little business in our sport. I have some ideas on what can be improved. It starts with the attitude, the mentality,… At the end of the season, we will reflect on how our collaboration worked and if the cooperation has a future.”
