Beatriz Haddad Maia wins the WTA Elite Trophy against Qinwen Zheng

Beatriz Haddad Maia, 19th player in the world, won the WTA Elite Trophy this Sunday, also called – unofficially – “Masters bis”, in Zhuhai (China). In the final, the Brazilian got the better of the Chinese Qinwen Zheng (7-6 [11]7-6 [4]), ranked just ahead of her at the WTA.

Haddad Maia thus won the third title of her career, and the first of the season (she had previously won titles in Nottingham and Birmingham last year).

In the marathon represented by the tie-break of the first round against Zheng, the semi-finalist of the last Roland-Garros saved three set points before concluding. In the second round, while leading 5-4, Beatriz Haddad Maia was broken. The set also ended in a tiebreak, where this time the Brazilian clearly made the difference.
