Barça still owe money to seven different clubs for the signing of Robert Lewandowski

BarcelonaBarça owes other clubs 89,424,000 euros, almost 90 million, in the short term – less than 12 months – for footballers signed in recent seasons. An amount to which almost 118 million euros must be added if you broaden your view and observe the long-term debt – from 12 months and one day onwards. At the same time, the Blaugrana entity has to collect a figure slightly higher than 49 million euros in the short term and 40 million more in the long term for players transferred or loaned in recent years. In total and synthetically, the difference between additions and sales corresponding to the last season (2022-23) is approximately 180 million euros. To obtain this information, the ARA has had access to the latest financial audit of the club by the company Grant Thornton.

The bulk of the debt corresponds to the mandate of the current president, Joan Laporta. As for the rest, the entity still owes a good chunk of Frenkie de Jong, signed by Josep Maria Bartomeu in January 2019 in exchange for 86 million euros, of which Barça still owes 16 to Ajax short term. As for the rest of the operations carried out during Bartomeu’s presidency, small amounts are still owed for Nélson Semedo, Neto Murara – who arrived from Valencia in a transaction to settle scores from an exchange with Jasper Cillessen–, Jean-Claire Todibo, Emerson Royal, Junior Firpo and Miralem Pjanic. As for the Bosnian midfielder, money is owed to up to four different clubs, in relation to training rights and percentage agreements between entities in relation to future sales clauses.

Raphinha is the one who is owed the most money

Already under the presidency of Laporta, the bulk of this item of debts is headed by Raphinha. The footballer signed for Barça when he was represented by Deco, before the ex-Blaugrana player left his agency to work as sporting director. The Brazilian winger still owes 24 million in the short term and 38 more in the long term to Leeds United, from where he arrived in the summer of 2022. Apart from other small amounts to Raphinha’s previous clubs, such as Sporting Club de Portugal, the Portuguese Vitória Sport Clube or the French Stade Rennais. In the case of Leeds, Barça still owes him so much money that the English entity factored its right to collect through a financial institution. This basically means that it is a bank that advances the amount in exchange for interest.

It was precisely in the summer of 2022 when Barça substantially strengthened the squad with leverage, which explains why such high amounts are still owed to other clubs. In fact, due to the delicate financial situation of the entity, asking to pay in installments is not a strange practice in the Blaugrana offices in recent years. Although there are also significant debts coming from before this summer. For Ferran Torres, signed from Manchester City for a fixed fee of 55 million euros in January 2022, 13 million euros are still owed in the short term and 26 in the long term.

For Robert Lewandowski, who cost 45 million fixed also in the summer of 2022, 10 million must still be paid in the short term to Bayern Munich and 21 more in the long term. In fact, for the Pole, small payments have to be made to six other clubs besides the Bavarian: Borussia Dortmund and the Poles Legia Warsaw, Lech Poznan, Delta Warsaw, Znicz Pruszków and MKS Warsaw. 36 million euros are owed for Jules Kounde, most of which will go to Sevilla.

Barça has yet to perceive a good pinch for Trincão

As for the debts that Barça has pending to collect from other clubs, the highest amount corresponds to Francisco Trincão. Barça still has to receive around 13 million euros for the Portuguese between short and long term debts. The list is continued by Griezmann, since Atlético de Madrid still owes nearly 9 million euros to the Blaugrana entity that must be satisfied in the short term.
