Sport is a social engine like few others that manages to strengthen ties between people and, in addition, generate a sense of belonging and roots. For these reasons, among others, the Avilés City Council has once again organized Sports Day, the sixth edition of which has brought together 30 sports clubs of 20 different modalities, and which settled in numerous locations in the town yesterday afternoon.
From the Plaza de Domingo Álvarez Acebal to the La Expósito track, passing through El Parche, Camposagrado or La Cámara, there were dozens of multidisciplinary athletes who gave a good example of their abilities, with the aim of encouraging, especially the little ones , to practice some modality.
Patricia Berciano, director of the “Gimnático Versalles y Valoe” artistic gymnastics school, was present during the exhibition of her students, some of whom started at the age of 3. Considered an exclusive sport for women, the coaches at the school, which is more than 30 years old, encouraged the youngest to join in practicing rhythmic gymnastics.
In the Plaza de Camposagrado there was Carlos Fernández, PP councilor in the Avilés City Council and, also, a coach in the Avilés Judo Club, with about 350 members. The mayor and “judoka” highlighted the importance of disseminating Aviles sports entities and emphasized the relevance of judo in the city, a sport that is generally a minority but is one of the most practiced in the town.
The day had a great participation not only from the entities and athletes, but also from the curious who filled the streets and surrounded the exhibitions of rhythmic gymnastics, judo, archery, basketball, cycling or self-defense. In addition, Mayor Mariví Monteserín and Sports Councilor David García received boxer Sara Montoya and driver Alba Vázquez, the first woman to win the Spanish Touring Car Championship, at the town hall.
