ATP Finals: Battle for Turin Intensifies as Zverev and Rune Seek Qualification

Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev can sit back in Paris – at least in a figurative sense.

The quintet has already fought for its place at the ATP Finals in Turin (November 12th to 19th) in the past few weeks and months, so in the French capital it is “only” about the last Masters in the French capital Season.

For six other athletes, however, the chance of Turin is still on their minds. Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune occupy the last three remaining places before their start in Paris, but are under a lot of pressure from Taylor Fritz, Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud.

In view of the 1000 points to be awarded as usual at the Masters, the field can still be mixed up properly. Who has the best cards in the showdown for the ATP finals?

ATP Finals: Zverev and Rune look backwards

Zverev could crown his comeback on the ATP tour with another strong performance in Paris. If the German Olympic champion, who has already won two titles in Hamburg and Chengdu this year, also manages another successful run in France, his ticket to Turin would no longer be taken away from him. The Hamburger is currently in seventh place with 3,505 points, 430 points ahead of Hurkacz (9th/3,075).

Of the six direct competitors, Rune has the most to lose – at least in the world rankings. After all, the Danish youngster and Boris Becker’s protégé is entering the race as defending champion. Since the “Race for Turin” is about the points scored in the 2023 season, only the Dane’s current form counts – and this is currently fluctuating.

Last year Rune missed the finals by a whisker, but twelve years later they are within reach again. To do this, he has to cling to his eighth place (3290 points) – and at best unleash his Paris magic from last season again.

Tsitsipas, on the other hand, probably has the best cards. With 3885 points, the Greek is currently in sixth place and can only be displaced by an early exit from the Masters.

Hurkacz, Fritz and Ruud under pressure

While Zverev, Ruud and Tsitsipas have their fate in their own hands, Hurkacz (9th/3075), Fritz (10th/3065) and Ruud (11th/2825) have to hope that their competition will slip up.

For Hurkacz and Fritz, as well as for Zverev, the hunt for points begins in the round of 64.

Fritz will face the Argentinian Sebastián Baez on Monday, while Hurkacz will face the American Sebastian Korda on Tuesday.

Zverev starts his Masters adventure in Paris on Tuesday – and wants to take the first step towards the ATP Finals in Turin against Márton Fucsovics.
