Alexander Zverev Advances to Quarterfinals in Beijing ATP Tournament

Alexander Zverev reached the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in Beijing. A few days after his tournament victory in Chengdu, the tenth in the world rankings prevailed 6:7 (4:7), 6:2, 6:1 against the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. In the quarterfinals on Monday, Zverev will face the Chilean Nicolas Jarry.

After the match, Zverev criticized his late start, as he has done so often this year – he only scored the match point at 2:30 a.m. (local time). “I don’t know if that always has to be the case,” he said on Sky: “I just know that I’m very tired now and feel a bit under the weather.”

Zverev kept the first set against Davidovich open until 5:5, then the Spaniard used his second break point to make it 6:5. Zverev countered, saved himself in the tiebreak and was ultimately left behind when Davidovich converted his first set point after 1:14 hours.

Then Zverev turned up the heat. 45 minutes later he had equalized the set at 6:2 against an opponent who was now completely overwhelmed, and after 2:34 hours he brought home his first match point against an opponent who was increasingly physically deteriorating.

Zverev, a two-time semi-finalist in the Chinese capital (2017, 2019), can continue to hope for the third title in his comeback season and the 22nd overall on the ATP tour. Before winning the tournament in Chengdu, the Hamburg native triumphed in his hometown at the end of July.

With the exception of the US Open winner Novak Djokovic, a large part of the world’s elite is teeing off at the 500 tournament in Beijing. This also applies to world number two Carlos Alcaraz, who will face Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the round of 16 on Sunday.
