Jannik Sinner could already displace Novak Djokovic from the top of the world rankings in Paris. But it is still unclear whether Sinner can compete in the French Open. A complicated injury is a concern.

In January he defeated Novak Djokovic and became the first Italian to win a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open. He followed this with titles in Rotterdam and Indian Wells. He only lost 2 of 30 games this year: the final in Miami against Carlos Alcaraz and the semi-final in Monte Carlo against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Jannik Sinner dominates men’s tennis. And it is probably only a matter of time before he replaces the out-of-form Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings.

To Paris number 1?

It could happen as early as the beginning of June, after the French Open. That is, if defending champion Djokovic does not make it to the final. If the Serb loses in the final, Sinner has to reach the semi-finals. And if Djokovic wins the Coupe des Mousquetaires for the fourth time, he will only remain at the top if his final opponent is not called Sinner.

However, it is quite possible that Sinner will not be able to compete in Paris. The South Tyrolean has been taking a break since the end of April, when he threw in the towel before the quarter-finals in Madrid. He also had to forgo the home tournament in Rome, where the last tough test before the second Grand Slam tournament of the year is currently taking place.

The reason for this is an injury that turns out to be more stubborn than initially assumed. As the Italian sports newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport” reports, it is a severe inflammation of the right hip joint, triggered by trauma.

The treating doctors advised Sinner to forego the French Open. Because the hip joint is considered particularly fragile. Overexertion can lead to chronic inflammation. And in the worst case, endanger the career of the 22-year-old.

Therapy at Juventus Turin

Sinner has been in the Juventus Turin medical center since Monday, which allows the best possible treatment of the symptoms. The training in the gym is supplemented by exercises in the water, led by Sinner’s personal physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi and the athletic trainer Umberto Ferrara.

The original plan was to decide in the middle of this week whether Sinner would travel to Paris, where the game will be played from Sunday, May 27th. Now the stay has been extended until at least Sunday. Sinner is said to have not trained with the racket since the end of April.

Trainer sits on packed suitcases

Even when he canceled the home tournament in Rome, the 22-year-old was aware that there was a risk of a longer absence if he did not give the inflamed joint enough time to heal. «I would like to play every day and every tournament because I love tennis. But the season is long, my career is still long. But not so long that I want to risk wasting three years,” said Sinner.

In addition, Sinner has hardly any match practice and hardly any training on clay, which compromises his chances of winning the title at the French Open, where he reached the quarterfinals four years ago.

At the same time, he revealed the dilemma he finds himself in: What should he listen to? To the doctors and common sense who advise not to compete in Paris? Or the heart? Sinner is receiving support from his parents Siglinde and Hanspeter, who are expected in Turin these days.

The 22-year-old’s many supporters are hopeful that coach Darren Cahill was already sitting on packed suitcases on Wednesday. The Australian will travel straight to Paris – and hopes to be able to meet his protégé Sinner at the beginning of next week. (aargauerzeitung.ch)

The Swiss national team got off to a successful start in the Ice Hockey World Cup. However, some question marks remain – and now the real tests are coming.

Four games, four wins. The hockey team had a successful start to the World Cup in Prague. Of course there was the rather erratic performance against Austria in the 6:5 win. But this was followed by a reaction with a strong performance and victory in the penalty shootout against the Czech Republic. Yesterday’s 3-0 win against Great Britain was one of the most boring Nati games of modern times because victory was never in danger for a second.
