The talented director of The island of the treasure (2018) y Boarding! (2020) presented a beautiful and painful 39-minute film that straddles the line between documentary and fiction.

We are in June and it is the last hours of the school year at the Hénin-Beaumont school located in a town near Lille, in the north of France. The pandemic still forces the use of face masks, although at times the girls “forget” to use them. The imminence of the summer break is already in the air but for Linda and Irina, two 15-year-old students and best friends, the holidays mean the beginning of a separation process. Linda says that she is moving in with her family and Irina begins to feel firsthand the feeling of abandonment.

Between dance videos for TikTok, science lessons and gymnastics classes (they play badminton!), intimate conversations arise between the two protagonists, and doubts and contradictions in the face of an invitation to go out from a shy boy.

That great director who is Brac It is handled in this short format with more emphasis on the documentary record, perhaps with less sense of humor than in his previous works, but with enormous flexibility, sensitivity and naturalness (the protagonists are charming).

In that sense, A pang in the heart (A pang in the heart) joins with pride and virtuosity to that very French subgenre such as youth portraits in the context of secondary schools. And, when near the end the melancholic stanzas of Friendshipwith the voice of the great Françoise Hardy, the effect is heartbreaking.
