Special Olympics, in fact, is the most widespread international program to which they participate 180 countries in the world, thanks to which over 4 and a half million athletes with intellectual disabilities take important steps every day towards real social inclusion through the regular practice of a sporting discipline, simultaneously building a fundamental path of growth and individual autonomy.

“We are very happy and proud to host this important event which, in the year of the European City of Sport 2023, is the one that most corresponds to the values that Schio tries to convey – underlines the deputy mayor and social councilor, Cristina Marigo – and this is demonstrated by the attention of the many associations in the area who have been committed for a long time to offering sports proposals for everyone, without excluding anyone”.

“The Meeting started with the 1st Stage of the Special Football Northeast last February 15th at the Lanzi Gym and now sees its culmination with these two days – adds the sports councilor, Aldo Munarini – for Schio it is truly an important year that we have built together with the various protagonists of the world of sport, such as Special Olympics which I thank. To further highlight how fundamental a sport for all is for our city, we decided to name the Magrè Inclusive Park after Eunice Kennedy, activist for people with intellectual disabilities and founder of the Special Olympics in Chicago in the 1960s”.

The first City of Schio Meeting will experience one of its most symbolically important moments in the organization of TORCH RUN, in every way the same as the classic torchlight walk during the Olympic Games, Special Olympics being the only entity other than the IOC to be authorized to use the Olympic protocol within its events. The Olympic Torch, symbol of peace and solidarity, will be accompanied by runners from the State Police with a presence of the Fiamme Oro and supported by the Local Police. Alongside the torchbearers there will be representatives of the local associations and schools involved in the organization of the event. The Torch’s route will start from the Pala Romare to reach the Civic Theatre, where the opening ceremony of the games will be held at 6.30pm tomorrow.

“We anticipated the start of the sports season in order to respond to the warm invitation of the Municipal Administration of Schio with this Meeting. The idea was to create an event together that could promote sport for people with disabilities but, above all, lay the foundations of a path that will go beyond the events of this European Year of Sport” declares Claudia TrevisoProvincial Director of Special Olympics Italy.

“Our goal is to ensure that more and more families with children with disabilities approach sport, which is everyone’s right and as such must be guaranteed – he says Elisabetta Pusiol, regional director of Special Olympics Italy, recall that 2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the association in our country – sport allows many people with disabilities to increase self-esteem and have the opportunity to build new relationships. We believe in and promote a unified sport, where athletes with disabilities train and compete with athletes without disabilities.”

He also participated in the press conference to present the first City of Schio Meeting Alessandro Cumerlato, Special Olympics athlete (single tennis silver medalist and unified tennis bronze medalist at the Berlin 2023 Summer World Games) sending a message of encouragement to the athletes who will take part in the two-day event at Pala Romare.
