Donny van de Beek has not been included in Manchester United’s Champions League squad. It is another setback for the 26-year-old midfielder, who has not yet made a transfer to another club after a bad last season against all odds.
This transfer summer, he was linked with a move to Real Sociedad, but the deal fell through. Lorient also seemed a possibility, but a transfer to France was also not an option for Van de Beek.
All hope for Van de Beek now lies in the countries where the transfer market is still open. For example, the Turkish Galatasaray and the Belgian Antwerp would still be interested in the services of the midfielder. For Van de Beek, a late transfer seems to be the only escape from a hopeless situation.

Little playing time in England
In 2020 Van de Beek exchanged Ajax for Manchester United. The man from Nijkerkerveen was an important part of Ajax that fought its way to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019. In that semi-final, things only went wrong against Tottenham Hotspur just before time, which advanced to the final due to a late goal from Lucas Moura.
Once in Manchester, things did not go smoothly for Van de Beek. In his first season he still played regularly, but with one goal and two assists he was certainly not a stronghold under coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In his second season, his number of games decreased, after which Van de Beek was loaned to Everton in the second half of the season. There, too, he made an indelible impression.
Last season he returned to Man United, where former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag took the helm. Van de Beek played only ten games, of which only two in the starting line-up. This was partly due to a serious knee injury, which kept him aside for the second half of last season.
