Since classic Olympic sport, despite breathtaking records, is apparently no longer sufficient for the indispensable but also insatiable TV networks, something new is needed to attract new interested parties, to offer unprecedented, as obscure, bizarre duels as possible. This trend isn’t all that new, when I remember the battle between the sexes (which, by the way) between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, who was twice his age, in tennis – with the one-sided imitation of the ones who had no chance; young Venus Williams against tennis chain smoker Carsten Braasch, who followed decades later.
Somehow a step joke, if not a PR step of desperation, that the more conservative Swiss, of all people, announced at the traditional LA world class meeting in Zurich (where Armin Hary once ran the legendary 10.0) that the two outstanding world record holders in completely different Disciplines, pole vault star Armand Mondo Duplantis on the one hand, 400m hurdles superstar Carsten Warholm on the other, soon to be racing against each other in the superlatively sensational super clou – in the 100m sprint! Straight ahead and without hurdles or raised slats. Applause. Applause. Ultimate. Or rather puppet theater than a TV show?
On this occasion and in view of the undeniable fact that the domestic TV ORF sport, with the exception of very few top events in addition to football from the second division, even more Formula 1, although people should take their foot off the gas and pull the speed brake, full screen American football, a lot of judo, even more disabled sports, plenty of yoga to shake hands with and fitness programs late in the morning (literally), I came up with a completely new, different television idea – see Warholm against Duplantis.
And that would be, so now everyone will ask curiously? Yes, what about a duel between FIT with PHILIPP (October 9, ORF 1), already Romy-ennobled, and FIT for the young at heart (ORF Sport plus, 8.30) with the pre-gymnast Heidi Sykora, ex-wife of the ORF ski expert, from whom she has twins. Not as a wake-up call, of course, but as an evening message at prime time, similar to Dancing Stars, with much less effort, but with audience voting! And not just a duel, but best of 3, once ORF 1-Studio, once Sport-plus-Scenery in whatever countial or rural ambience. And then, as a grand finale, Filip against Heidi in the sancing parquet for the Golden Praxiteles, an athlete figure straight out of the books of Greek antiquity. Everything combined with a charity in favor of … there would certainly be enough time for light in the dark to find the important support for the right people.
PS: The whole thing was only intended as a joke, but nowadays it cannot be denied that the pranksters are increasingly directing the sport. Ninja Warrior, shaz or clop oba…
