Gudaf Tsegay smashed the world record for the 5,000 meters at the Diamond League final in Eugene, USA on Sunday. Armand Duplantis broke his own world record in the pole vault.
In the 5,000 meters, the Ethiopian Tsegay finished almost five seconds below the old top time with 14:00.21. Since June this year, it has been in the name of the Kenyan Faith Kipyegon (14.05.20).
The 26-year-old Tsegay kept the Kenyan Beatrice Chebet (14.05.92) well behind her. Her compatriot Ejgayehu Taye (14.21.52) finished third at an appropriate distance.
Tsegay won the world title in the 5,000 meters last year, but did not get further than thirteenth place at the World Championships in Budapest. She did win gold in the 10,000 meters in the Hungarian capital.
In the pole vault, 23-year-old Duplantis reached a height of 6.23 meters. With this, the Swede jumped one centimeter higher than during an indoor competition in Clermont-Ferrand, France in February this year.
For Duplantis it is his seventh world record in his career and his first this year in the open air. The world champion had already attempted four times this year at 6.23 meters, but without success.
