National player Gilberto Hernández has been killed in a shootout in his home country. The defender was only 26 years old.

What happened? According to the police, Gilberto died in an armed attack in the Caribbean port of Colón on Sunday, and seven other people were injured. On Monday, the authorities announced that a suspected perpetrator had been arrested. Possible background to the attack: clashes between rival criminal gangs.
Gilberto only made his debut in Panama’s national team in March, playing in the 1-1 draw against Guatemala and the 2-0 draw against Messi’s Argentina. The defender made the move from Herrera FC to top-flight club Atlético Independiente on a free transfer last year and has made 35 appearances for the club since then. He has made three appearances for Independiente this season and even captained his team in the CONCACAF Central American Cup in mid-August.
Panama’s Football Association, the league and his club expressed regret for Hernández’s death. Atletico Independiente posted a photo montage. Hernandez can be seen on a rock, lifting a trophy. They write: “See you soon, fly high, two-time champion.”
