The final of the US Open will take place on Saturday night between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka. The American settled on Thursday evening with the Czech Karolína Muchová, after which Sabalenka defeated the American Madison Keys in a thriller.

Sabalenka, who becomes the number one in the world due to the relatively early elimination of Iga Swiatek, only got Keys on his knees in the super tie break: 0-6, 7-6 (1) and 7-6 (5). Nineteen-year-old Gauff defeated Muchová in two sets: 6-4 and 7-5.

During the first act in her duel with 17th-seeded Keys, Sabalenka really was no shadow of the player who had not surrendered a set in this tournament until Thursday. The service specialist from Belarus made mistakes, so that Keys raced relatively easily to the set win.

The breaking point in the game was the tenth game in the second company, when the American served for the win, but succumbed to the pressure. Sabalenka pulled a tiebreak out of the fire, in which she dominated with a hard hand: 7-1.

In the decisive set, Keys relinquished a break lead, after which the future world ranking leader finished it off decisively in the super tie break.

For Sabalenka it will be the second Grand Slam final of 2023; at the beginning of this year she triumphed against Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open. She reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Gauff needs no less than six match points

Gauff benefited from a dramatic start by the Czech in her match against Muchová. It was 5-1 very quickly, but Muchová fought back to 5-4. The comeback came too late for the set win. In the second company, Gauff also showed himself to be the strongest, although the American needed six match points to get the job done.

After the first game of the second set, the game was halted for 49 minutes due to an action by climate activists, one of whom had glued himself to the stands with his bare feet.

In 2022, Gauff, who has been seen as a potential world champion for years, was in the final of Roland Garros. In it she went down against Swiatek. At the US Open, she never got further than the last eight until this year.

The men’s semifinals are between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton, who breaks through this tournament.
