“Even if rugby is a popular sport, its rules are difficult” admitted Isabelle Ithurburu (TF1) before the launch of the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Only one solution: explain and popularize! Rugby is certainly a contact sport, but one governed by strict rules. And as soon as one of the thirty players on the field commits an act of anti-play, the referee does not hesitate to take action. Two options are then available to the central judge. On one side, the yellow card, synonymous with a temporary ten-minute expulsion. On the other hand, the red card definitely sends the player back to the locker room.

Rugby World Cup 2023: a crossing of arms to request help from the “Bunker” located… at Roland-Garros!

If the field judge crosses his arms with a yellow card in his hand aimed at a player, the player is temporarily sent off, as the rule stipulates. However, this particular gesture by the referee means that the sanction is not stopped. It is therefore potentially likely to evolve to the disadvantage of the player. As soon as the referee makes the mysterious movement, this means that he is calling for help from a mysterious center, located in a place well known to the general public. Commonly known as the “Bunker”, the center is based on the Roland-Garros site in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. Inside it, a “full play review officer” rules on the disputed action. He has eight minutes to either validate the yellow card (sanction which will allow the player to return to the field after having served his ten minutes of expulsion) or to transform the yellow into red, thus forcing the sanctioned player to leave the game permanently. During the meeting between England and Argentina on September 9, Tom Curry had the bitter experience. The third row received a temporary warning before finally seeing the central referee transform the sentence into a definitive exclusion, after consulting the famous bunker.

Rugby World Cup 2023: two video devices to help the referee

“We should not talk about VAR like in football,” reminded us Dorian Grimaud, head of communications for World Rugby, contacted by telephone. Apart from the “Bunker” system explained previously, the referee can request another member of the refereeing body, called TMO (Television Match Official). This is installed in the stadium, near the OB vans. He analyzes contentious situations during practice and can challenge the referee on “unfair play” (dangerous fouls in particular). Another crutch at the disposal of the referee, who this time is not forced to cross his arms.
